The two canvases were part of a larger complex of at least six works that passed through the antique market of Turin in 1977 and came from a noble Turin collection. Some of the canvases were signed and dated 1752; all had the same proportions and measurements. It was probably a cycle dedicated, more than to the seasons, to the months of the year, given that the other canvases represented, as on the other hand the present two, episodes of daily life in old Turin with references to the sale of roasted chestnuts, to laundresses and summer, to a banquet with a flower seller and, in the background, the raising of the "maypole" tree. In any case, the group of canvases was of high quality and the two works presented here clearly testify to this.
The passage of time and the seasons in the artists of bambocciata represents a tasteful opportunity to narrate episodes of popular life: they were very popular with clients who were nobles or upper middle class ... (see Giamblanco catalog 2015)
