The armor bears the sovereign's monogram engraved under the neckline and is partly covered by a red mantle lined with ermine, which emphasizes the regal dignity of the character, also reiterated by the crown placed behind him. The articulated set of symbolic references is not limited to the canvas alone, but extends to the frame, the work of an excellent Piedmontese carver from the first half of the 18th century; the coherence of the two objects demonstrates that they were conceived from their origin as a unitary structure.
