SOLD The two paintings are highly representative of the late period of Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli's painting, when the now elderly artist collaborated with his son Angelo and created landscapes that were decidedly more realistic than his usual style. The works, the view of Novalesa and the Arcadian landscape with Turin in the background, formed a pair and have a royal provenance as suggested by the inscriptions on the back, which read: "View of the Valley of the village of Novalesa 'HM' [His Majesty]" and "View with buildings in the background - Cignaroli, Vittorio Amedeo Gaetano". The view of the village of Novalesa, which gives its name to the valley, with the waterfalls flowing from the mountains, is particularly luminous and captivating; the view with Turin in the background cleverly mixes reality and fantasy for a certainly very suggestive effect. View of Novalesa Valley portrays realistic landscapes, which is quite exceptional in Cignaroli’s production; Arcadian landscape artfully mixes dream and reality, bringing about a very evocative effect. The two paintings came probably in a pair, from a royal residence, as the descriptions on the reverse of the canvases suggest: «View of Novalesa village Valley HM [His Majesty]», and «View with buildings on the background – Cignaroli, Vittorio Amedeo Gaetano».
