Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli (Turin, 1730-1800) Landscape with ruins and hunters, circa 1765-1770 Oil on canvas, 190 x 125 cm Provenance: Turin, Pietro Accorsi Unpublished SOLD The large painting depicts a group of hunters resting on the banks of a river. In the shade of large trees and near an old boundary wall, surmounted by a monumental stone vase with a classicizing flavor, numerous characters are engaged in the tasks that follow the successful conclusion of the hunting activity. While some protagonists talk about the enterprise, with their guns still in hand and next to the feathered prey, another knight dedicates himself to a languid conversation with a lady. Even the page, who is leading the dogs to drink, is distracted by a graceful laundress intent on rinsing her clothes. Meanwhile, the squires take care of the animals that contributed to the hunt, freeing the horse from the saddle and resting the falcon. Despite the care lavished by the artist in describing and harmonizing the set of anecdotal elements, the dominant subject of the canvas turns out to be the broad landscape view. The painter has in fact been able to use a rich range of natural elements, which have been wisely declined without incurring disharmony, especially thanks to a use of lights and colors able to infuse the whole...
