Gerolamo Starace (1730-1794) Athena Separating Youth from Vice Oil on canvas, 76.5 x 102.5 cm for the attribution, verbal suggestion by Professor Nicola Spinosa. SOLD GIROLAMO STARACE FRANCHIS (1730 – 1794) He was among the major decorators active in Naples during the reign of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. Sent to Rome, thanks to the good offices of Luigi Vanvitelli, in 1756 as a fellow at Casa Farnese, he made several copies from Raphael and Annibale Carracci. Back in Naples, he collaborated (1762) on the works carried out in the Royal Tapestry Factory. Called by Vanvitelli to Caserta for the decoration of the vault of the Staircase of the new Royal Palace, he painted the Allegories of the four Seasons and the Reign of Apollo there, and subsequently, in the vault of the Guard Room, an allegory with the Glory of the Prince and the twelve Provinces of the Kingdom of Naples. On the other hand, the frescoes by his hand that decorated some rooms of Palazzo Berio in Naples and the loggia of the Royal Palace of Portici were destroyed. His activity was fruitful both in Naples and Caserta. In the Neapolitan city he worked at the church of Santi Marcellino e Festo (Christ and the Magdalene, signed and dated 1764), in the Real Casa Santa dell’Annunziata (Baptism of Christ and the Immaculate Conception, ca. 1770) and in San Paolo Maggiore (frescoes with Allegories of Virtue); in Caserta, in the church of San Sebastiano, he painted a Madonna del Rosario and in Marcianise, in the province of Caserta, in the church of Ave Gratia Plena he created the Coronation of Thorns, the Fall under the Cross, a Deposition and, in the sacristy, an Annunciation and the fresco of the vault with The Charity of Saint Lucy.
