[…] The ovals presented here are two successful examples of the collaboration between Lissandrino and Antonio Francesco Peruzzini: the vibrant and energetic human figures of Magnasco, created with rapid and synthetic brushstrokes, animate the dreamy bird's-eye landscapes set up by his friend and colleague, which reflect the influence of Salvator Rosa but also of Nordic artists active in Italy, such as Mathieu van Plattenberg and especially Pieter Mulier, known as Tempesta. The very theme of the carriage assaulted by brigands is of northern European derivation, very common in the seventeenth century in Holland and Flanders and spread in Italy by the engravings of Jacques Callot. Magnasco and Peruzzini address it on several occasions, sometimes combining it with scenes of banquets and wedding processions, so much so as to suggest a reference to the picaresque literature of the time, which was also very appreciated in Spanish Lombardy.
