Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli (Turin, 1730-1800) Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, circa 1754 Seascape with Jesus Saving Saint Peter from the Waters, circa 1754 Oil on canvas, 51.5 x 39 cm each Unpublished SOLD […] The two unpublished ovals were originally probably part of a group dedicated to episodes from the New Testament, quite similar, in terms of the sacred subject and dimensions, to the one in the Hermitage. The first canvas depicts the Rest on the Flight into Egypt: in a shaded clearing, open among the rocks, a caring angel offers the Child a plate full of fruits, under the attentive gaze of his parents. The artist hints at the exotic setting with the sole addition of a large palm tree moved by the wind. For the composition of the scene, Vittorio Amedeo probably used the repertoire of images collected by Scipione, perhaps resorting to an engraving such as Pier Francesco Mola's Flight into Egypt from Albani. The second work illustrates a passage from the Gospel of Matthew (14:22-33), in which Jesus reaches the disciples' boat on the Sea of Tiberias, walking on the water...
