SOLD Throughout his career, Johann Carl Loth repeatedly depicted the theme of the healing of Tobit, narrated in the biblical book of the same name. The story is well known: Tobit, a pious Israelite in exile, loses his sight, and it seems that his faithfulness to the God of Israel is not rewarded. His son Tobias, accompanied by a mysterious figure who will later reveal himself as the Archangel Raphael, will make a long journey from which he will return with a medicine taken from the gall of a fish, which will restore his father's sight. In the various versions, Loth has maintained the same articulation, placing the figure of the old Tobit seated, in the center of the scene, bare-chested, while the son, depicted as little more than a boy, is about to spread an ointment on his eyes taken from the small container he holds in his right hand. Complementing these two main figures are also the two figures of Tobit's wife and the Archangel Raphael.
