Valerio Castello (Genoa, 1624-1659) Triumph of David Oil on canvas, 144 x 198 cm SOLD […] The painting, a masterpiece of the artist's maturity, represents the episode from the Old Testament, taken from the First Book of Samuel, in which the young shepherd David, after killing the terrifying Goliath with a simple slingshot, triumphantly enters Jerusalem carrying the giant's severed head on top of a sword. Castello, based on the biblical text («As they returned, when David was returning from killing the Philistine, the women came out from all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing to meet King Saul, accompanied by tambourines, with shouts of joy and with sistrums.
