[…] The «Adoration of the Shepherds» Giamblanco, published in the repertoire of 17th-century Ligurian painting curated by Ezia Gavazza, Federica Lamera and Lauro Magnani (La pittura in Liguria 1990) and then in Camillo Manzitti's monograph on Valerio Castello (Manzitti 2004), has already been exhibited to the public in the past as part of the important 2008 exhibition on the artist. This is a subject often addressed by the Genoese painter, of which this constitutes, according to Manzitti, one of the most successful and stylistically advanced versions; see for comparison the canvases of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig and the National Museum in Warsaw (Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie).
In our «Adoration» the group of the Madonna with the Child assumes absolute centrality and all the directions of the scene revolve around it. Particular attention is dedicated to the use of light: abandoning the now classic artifice of the Child Jesus who emanates a supernatural luminosity from within, used by Correggio in the famous «Night» in Dresden, the artist chooses here to place the infant in the glimpse of a ray of natural light that filters from the outside. Some citations are evident from the famous «Adoration of the Shepherds» implemented by Grechetto in San Luca in Genoa (altarpiece signed and dated 1645), for example in the figure… (See Giamblanco 2015 catalog)
