"[...] Following the example of Ribera, Cesare Fracanzano often tried his hand at creating half-figure saints and prophets, focusing more on the representation of the emotional state of the characters than on their characterization through traditional iconographic attributes. This is the case of this dramatic "Saint Peter", identifiable only thanks to the classic representation of the gray beard and the blue robe with the yellow stole. These are works painted both for religious (in particular from the Jesuit and Oratorian orders) and private commissions.
Other versions with slight variations are known of the painting, all likely originating in Spagnoletto's workshop, perhaps from a lost prototype by the master. [...]
