Vittorio Amedeo and Angelo Cignaroli (Turin, 1730-1800 – Turin, 1767-1841/1842) Snowy Landscape and Summer Landscape with Bathers, circa 1790 Oil on canvas, cm 48 x 68.5; cm 47 x 68.5 On the back of the frame, old pen inscriptions: "Winter" and "Summer" The Snowy Winter Landscape and the Summer Landscape with Bathers originate from the collaboration of the Turin painter Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli with his son Angelo. They can be placed within the context of a successful production of canvases with subjects focused on views of the residences of the Savoy crown and the most evocative panoramas of the Kingdom of Sardinia, now partly preserved between the Palazzo Chiablese in Turin and the Ducal Castle of Agliè. This thematic strand shows Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli's attempt to adapt his art to the new taste of the clientele at the end of the eighteenth century, who no longer sought only a landscape painting focused on idyllic visions of Arcadia but on convincing representations of their territory. The painter then proposes an original compromise between the rendering of views taken from life and the declination of the elegiac repertoire that had characterized his previous production, shaped on the example of artists such as Giuseppe Zais and Francesco Zuccarelli.
