Cignaroli Vittorio Amedeo (Turin, 1730-1800) Arcadian Landscape with Ladies at the Pier Oil on canvas, 79 x 107 cm SOLD […] of particular charm, unfolds and narrates the happy tale of Arcadia with the participation of noblewomen and knights and their delightful and light world. The figures represent noble ladies in the countryside, on the banks of a small river, engaged in crossing a stream by boat, immersed in a fresh and luminous bucolic atmosphere: fortunate representatives of Piedmontese aristocratic society, who live in an imaginative pastoral community, imagining the garden as a rural setting borrowed from painting. In this fictitious pastoral world, tender loves blossom and the sentimental breath of the rural setting of these stories is limited like the dimensions of a small paradise: those of the canvas. Like the nymphs of certain Arcadian painters, the Turin ladies on holiday stroll among the flowers and dance on the meadows, dine on the grass: in the canvas the Arcadian poetics become refined, gallant and graceful, tending to create attractive nuances, moving in consonance with the figurative developments of the Rococo (see Giamblanco 2015 catalog).
