Cignaroli's works revive the figurative tradition of the great seventeenth-century landscape painters (starting with Claude Lorrain) modernized and updated: the countryside becomes a sort of locus amoenus, between the literary and the dreamlike, a place of leisure, of 'delights' and not of toil; a countryside without farmers, as I have often defined it, a safe place to rest from the worries of the city, populated by nobles and bourgeois on horseback in search of entertainment or by young shepherds dedicated to delicate love games.
