The two canvases introduce the viewer to situations of absolute rural serenity, in which some characters spend their lives in a nature of Arcadia, completely free of pitfalls or threats. The first painting shows a graceful laundress intent on rinsing her clothes in the river, while a shepherdess surrounded by herds watches her curiously. The second painting instead portrays a young family resting on the banks of a stream; under a large plant, the mother and her little son joke happily, waiting for the father to successfully complete his fishing trip.
