CARLE DAUPHIN (Metz, circa 1625/1628 – Turin, 1678)
Portrait of a lady depicted as Diana at rest (Francesca d’Orléans Duchess of Savoy?)
Carlo Emanuele II of Savoy married, by proxy, in Paris on March 4, 1663, with great celebrations, the very young Francesca di Borbone d’Orléans (1648-1664), daughter of Duke Gastone d’Orléans, brother of King Louis XIII of France. On March 23, the bride left Paris and set off on a journey to reach Piedmont with a large escort. Carlo Emanuele II reached her
in Savoy and on May 14 Francesca made her official entry into Turin amidst a triumph of crowds, along a route traced between Porta Nuova and the Royal Palace. The Turinese life of the princess was as short as that of a rose and marred by the deaths of members of the royal family, including her mother-in-law Cristina of France who died on December 27 of the same year, 1663. Francesca followed her into the tomb shortly after; she died, in fact, on January 14, 1664 at just sixteen years old. The legends that flourished about this gentle and unfortunate girl are many: she was called «Colombina d’amore» because of her grace and her unripe charm and it seems that the young duke loved her very much. Of Francesca remain in the Savoy residences and in France… (See Giamblanco catalog 2014)
