Neptune surprises the nymph Caenis, circa 1670 Oil on canvas, 128 x 206 cm. Unpublished. SOLD The author of the two important paintings is the Lorraine painter Charles Dauphin, a student of Simon Vouet, who worked at the court of Turin for almost three decades from around 1650 to 1678, the year of his death. Charles Dauphin was born in Metz, in Lorraine. The painter probably receives initial training in Nancy, as can be seen from a comparison with works by Claude Deruet (1588- 1660) and Georges Lallemand (1575-1636). He is then documented, starting from 1647, in Paris. He attends the studio of Simon Vouet until the time of the master's death (June 1649) and subsequently moves to Turin where he is certainly present before 1652; in this year in fact (October 24) he marries Lucrezia De Magistri. In the capital of Savoy, Dauphin achieves considerable success: he becomes painter to the Prince of Carignano and the Savoy family, working intensively also for the churches of the city...
