Giovanni Battista Merano (Genoa, 1632 – Piacenza, 1698) - The Denial of Saint Peter SOLD
Author : Giovanni Battista Merano (1632 - 1698)
Period: 17th century
Born in Genoa in 1632, Giovanni Battista Merano trained in the workshop of Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari and then in that of Valerio Castello; it was probably the latter who advised the pupil to stay in Parma to study Correggio and Parmigianino, as he had done in his time. During this first stay in Parma, Giovanni Battista worked on the fresco decoration of the Oratory of San Giuseppe (1651), making use of the skills already acquired by taking part in the decorative construction sites directed by Castello. The influence of the master is also strongly felt in Merano's first works on canvas, such as the "Beheading of the Baptist" in San Rocco in Genoa or the "Banquet of Belshazzar"...
