Period: 17th century
Bernardo Strozzi, known as "il Cappuccino" or "il Prete Genovese" (Genoa, 1581 – Venice, 1644) Parable of the Wedding Guest, 1636 Oil on canvas, 183 x 126.5 cm. SOLD Currently held at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Bernardo Strozzi (also known as "il Cappuccino" or "il Prete Genovese" due to his biographical events), a fundamental figure in early 17th-century Italian painting, was born in Genoa in 1581 and apprenticed in the workshop of the Tuscan Mannerist Pietro Sorri. A Capuchin friar, he moved to Venice in 1633 due to legal problems with his order. Here, being an established artist, he immediately obtained important commissions. In 1636, Strozzi executed a large oval canvas to be placed on the ceiling above the high altar of the Venetian church of the Ospedale degli Incurabili, representing the "Parable of the Wedding Guest." The decorative project was completed only several years later, with the addition of the "Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins" by Padovanino (completed in 1644) and the "Paradise" begun by Sante Peranda in 1638 and completed after his death by Francesco Maffei. The iconographic reading of this construction site obviously revolved around the scene of "Paradise," with the two parables alluding to the need to be found with the soul ready to ascend to heaven at the moment of death. The large canvas by the Cappuccino, of which this figure of a sovereign owned by the Galleria Giamblanco constitutes an extraordinary fragment. - Galleria Giamblanco Catalog, Italian Painting from the Seventeenth to Eighteenth Centuries, Allemandi, Turin, 2015, pp. 10 -13. http://dipintiantichigiamblanco.it/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Catalogo_Giamblanco_2015.pdf Height cm: 183 Width cm: 126.5 For more information send us an email: galleria@giamblanco.com Go to main site Follow us on Facebook
