Still Life with Fruit
Oil on canvas, 69 x 97 cm

Fascinating canvas, of great quality. It depicts a still life of white and black grapes in a wicker basket placed on a marble surface. Next to it, two apples have been placed to the left. A bunch of small white flowers, likely jasmine, emerges in the center, just below the basket. The light, clear and analytical, with dense shadows on the tabletop, clearly shows a Caravaggesque ancestry, perhaps mediated by the magnificent baskets of the still anonymous but great painter gravitating in the area of Giovanni Battista Crescenzi, the so-called Master of the Acquavella Still Life.
The style and the remarkable pictorial quality indicate the name of Giovanni Stanchi as the author of the work. This is also evidenced by convincing comparisons, such as that with a painting recently passed at a French auction with the correct ascription to Stanchi, which presents an almost identical scheme, with analogous formal solutions and the same analytical quality of light, so as to be clearly from the same hand as the one studied here...
