[…] sketches, or maybe even afterthoughts for two of the eight «Allegories of the gifts of the Holy Spirit» by Niccolò Ricciolini in Rome, Santa Maria degli Angeli basilica. Ricciolini made these paintings from 1730 to 1740 as models – traditionally called «cartoons» – for the mosaic decoration of the dome of the chapel dedicated to the Madonna of the Column in Saint Peter’s basilica. As one can see from the illustrations in an important essay by Maria Barbara Guerrieri Borsoi (1988, pp. 166-171, figs. 1-2), the two paintings here discussed undoubtedly are by Niccolò Ricciolini.
