Jan Frans Van Bloemen (1662 - 1749) and Placido Costanzi (1702 - 1759) Landscape with the Dismissal of Hagar and Ishmael/Landscape with Hagar and the Angel 1740 - 1750 Oil on canvas, cm 96 x 73 each SOLD The two paintings, clearly conceived as pendants, narrate two biblical episodes taken from the book of Genesis (21, 8-21). The first depicts Abraham, prompted by his wife Sarah's will, dismissing Hagar, the Egyptian slave from whom he had a son named Ishmael. The second shows the subsequent episode in which Hagar, lost in the Beersheba desert, is helped by the angel who shows her the source from which she will draw water to quench Ishmael's thirst. - Francesco Gatta, Catalog of the Giamblanco Gallery 2014, Allemandi, Turin 2014, pp 46 - 47.
