Author : Guglielmo Caccia Detto il Moncalvo
Period: 16th century
Guglielmo Caccia Known as il Moncalvo (Montabone 1568-Moncalvo 1625) Saint Maurice Oil on canvas, cm 193 x 133 SOLD "This important canvas, previously unpublished, represents a full-length figure of Saint Maurice on horseback, turned towards the outside of the painting in an intense exchange of glances with the viewer, while in the background the tumultuous martyrdom of the Theban Legion, to which the saint belonged, is depicted. In the upper right, a little angel carries a crown and the palm of martyrdom. Saint Maurice wears armor with a trefoil cross, which corresponds to that of the Savoy order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus ("The decoration of the order consists of a gold trefoil cross, enameled in white (St. Maurice)", in Boselli 1917, part II, The classes of the decorated, p. 101), and a rich plumed helmet. Saint Maurice is the patron saint of the Savoy family, who named a chivalrous order after him in the 15th century, which in 1573 became the order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus."
