Alpheus and Arethusa
Circa 1705-1710
Oil on canvas
cm 121 x 171
"This large canvas by Luigi Garzi depicting the rare mythological episode - taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses - of Alpheus and Arethusa has recently been the subject of an in-depth scientific and iconographic study by Stefania Macioce and is the cover of the first collection of essays entirely dedicated to the artist, edited by Francesco Grisolia and Guendalina Serafinelli for Officina Libraria.
Erroneously considered from Pistoia by some sources, Garzi was actually born in Rome in 1638 and spent most of his artistic career there; in the pontifical city he completed his first apprenticeship, first in the entourage of the painter from Antwerp Vincent Adriaenssen, then in the workshop of the Flemish landscape painter Salomon Baeckereel and simultaneously in that of the great classicist Andrea Sacchi."
