Pietro Dandini, also known as "Pier Dandini", (1646 Florence - 1712 ), BACCHANAL
Author : Pietro (Pier) Dandini (Firenze 1646 - 1712)
Period: 17th century
Pietro Dandini, also known as "Pier Dandini" (Florence 1646 - 1712 ) BACCHANAL Oil on canvas 114.5 x 139.5 cm This scenery with several figures was realized in large format, the people arranged in individual groups. A pair of main characters are sitting on a rock at the top left, while the man in red cloth adorned with ivy leaves is being served wine while he is being caressed by a young woman. A second dominant group, on the right at the bottom, shows another couple, poorly dressed, in front of a large copper wine cooler, with some fruit on the ground . On the right there's the stout, naked Bacchus riding a donkey from the right edge of the picture to the center, accompanied by two maenads who hand him a drinking bowl and a jug while he embraces one of them. On the left there's a satyr with a panpipe. In the lower right corner is painted another couple, a young girl lying lasciviously over a cloth with her breasts bared that lifts her wine bowl to a bacchante, who fills it with a jug. Several putti and goat-footed little satyrs are placed among all those figures, while in the background we find a hilly landscape under billowing clouds. The artist comes from an extensive family of painters. His painting style, like the one of his workshop, is characterized by numerous influences from the experiences he made i nBologna, Venice, Modena and Rome. Supported by the Medici family, including Prince Ferdinand and the Grand Duke, he received numerous commissions, including some for churches such as San Jacopo Soprarno or San Frediano. He also made the bezels for the San Giovannino degli Scolopi. He realized the painting of St. Francis in the Roman church of Santa Maria Maggiore too, to name just a few examples.
